Blanchelande College

Mission Statement

Blanchelande College is an independent, coeducational Catholic school for boys and girls aged 4-18, and is Guernsey’s only provider of Catholic education at secondary level. The College is widely recognised for the outstanding quality of its all-round education, offering excellent academic standards alongside the highest level of pastoral care in a Catholic environment.

The College is set on a beautiful rural estate, Les Vauxbelets, once the site of a De La Salle school for boys. Blanchelande itself is the successor of the convent school of the same name. The College is now lay run. The Little Chapel – dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes – is within the Vauxbelets estate.

While being fully inclusive of Catholic and non-Catholic students, Blanchelande maintains a strong Catholic identity and mission:

  • Morning prayer is said each day, and several Masses for the whole school are celebrated throughout each term.
  • Confessions are also available for students at least during the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent.
  • Pupils in Year 3 and above are offered the opportunity to be prepared in school for the sacraments of Confessions and Holy Communion, alongside regular Sunday Mass attendance.
  • All students belong to one of three houses: Saint Agnes, Saint Bernadette, and Saint Therese. The School is under the patronage of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
  • The Rosary is said regularly during the week during lunchtimes, with voluntary attendance for students.
  • The Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a small Oratory, by permission of the Bishop of Portsmouth.

Students study Religious Education as a core subject to GCSE, and study the Catholic Christianity and Judaism paper. Throughout the school students are given an awareness of, and respect for, people of different religious beliefs.

Five Golden Rules:

Our philosophy of education is a simple one and recognises that as a school we must always place the needs of our children at the heart of what we do. Every child is a unique individual with different talents and aptitudes. Our job as educators therefore is to fully develop their potential both academically, culturally, athletically and spiritually within a caring and supportive environment. This helps to build confidence and self-esteem which is essential for their happiness and well being.

For this reason we have ‘Five Golden Rules’ in the school which we expect all of our pupils and staff to follow. These reflect what we believe to be essential for their education and development:

  1. Do your best to be your best
  2. Be kind and helpful
  3. Treat others as you would like to be treated
  4. Be polite and well-mannered
  5. Respect the views of everyone in our community and beyond
