Tuesday 15th August is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. It is a Holy Day of Obligation when we should participate in Mass. The Assumption celebrates the great dogma of faith that the Blessed Mother was taken up into heaven body and soul at the end of her life on earth. Mary was free from the Original Sin and whilst she accepted death as Jesus did, through Him she was spared bodily corruption. She has now joined her Son in heaven. The Assumption thus enables us to give honour to Mary for her part in the Redemption and reminds us that we carry within our bodies, which are Temples of the Holy Spirit, the seeds of eternity. Her Assumption foreshadows our own entry body and soul into the happiness of heaven.
