Education Sunday is a national day of prayer and celebration for everyone involved in the world of education. For more than 100 years there has been an annual recognition of Education Sunday in England and Wales (traditionally on the ninth Sunday before Easter).

In Guernsey we are immensely proud of our Catholic schools and acknowledge with gratitude the sacrifices made over the last 160 years. We have been left a wonderful legacy and we need to ensure that our schools are still here to serve our children and their grandchildren.

Next Sunday parents and children will be speaking at all Masses. Parents will say in their own words why they chose a catholic School for their children, and the children will say why our schools are special.

Throughout England and Wales, the second collection on Education Sunday goes to the Catholic Education Service of England and Wales (CESEW) which represents the interests of the Church at local and national levels. However, our Bishop has given a special concession to Guernsey to allow us to keep the proceeds of this collection in the island. This concession has been agreed because the States of Guernsey will not support the buildings in the Catholic Voluntary Schools in the way the UK Government does.

This means that the second collection next Sunday goes towards the upkeep of our two Voluntary schools, Notre Dame du Rosaire and St Mary and St Michael. Please give as generously as you can and ensure these fine schools are there to serve our community for many years to come.

Above all, please pray for everyone involved in our schools, on Sunday next, and throughout this special year.
